Secondary activity

All important information regarding requirements and approval for a part-time job alongside your full-time job at Leuphana can be found below.

General Information

When am I allowed to engage in sideline activities?

In principle, secondary employment may only be carried out outside of working hours. Secondary employment may only be carried out after you have notified the university of the secondary employment or have submitted an application for approval (see below).

What are the restrictions on secondary employment?

Some. The employer may prohibit or impose conditions on secondary employment if it is likely to interfere with the performance of the employee's duties under the employment contract or with legitimate interests of the employer.

To what extent am I allowed to have a part-time job?

For employees covered by collective bargaining agreements, there is no direct time limit for secondary employment. However, you are obliged to observe the regulations of the Working Hours Act (ArbZG). As a rule of thumb, you may work a total of 1/5 of the regular working hours of a full-time position, including sideline work.ht.

Are secondary activities subject to delivery?

With the exception of secondary employment in or for the public sector, there is generally no obligation to make deliveries in the case of remuneration for secondary employment.

For secondary employment in or for the public service, a duty of surrender applies to all compensation in excess of the following amounts:

  • Pay scale level EG 1 to EG 8: annual amount 4,100 euros
  • Pay scale level EG 9 to EG 12: annual amount 4,700 euros
  • Pay scale level EG 13 to EG 15: annual amount 5,400 Euro

These amounts apply on a calendar year basis. The decisive factor here is when a secondary activity was performed, not when the remuneration was paid.

When do I have to report/apply for approval for secondary employment?

In good time before taking up secondary employment, even if the actual activity only arises at short notice or even if it is "not clear" whether an activity will come about. If you have forgotten to report your secondary employment or to apply for approval, please contact the Human Resources Department. Although you have violated your employment contract obligations in this way, it is the goal of the personnel administration to find a solution in the interest of all parties involved ("better late than never").

Who must sign secondary employment notices or an authorization?

Immediate supervisors sign for all University employees.

Am I allowed to have a part-time job during the recreation leave?

In any case, contact the Human Resources Department here. No gainful activity contrary to the purpose of the leave may be engaged in during a recuperative leave. The purpose of the leave is to recuperate in order to refresh the work force. However, this does not necessarily prohibit the pursuit of secondary employment, if such activity does not conflict with the purpose of the leave.

Can I omit information from the application?

No, the required information is limited to the minimum required by law, accordingly all information must be provided in full.

May I use University facilities, personnel, or materials in the course of part-time employment?

Any use of facilities, personnel and material of the Foundation for the exercise of secondary activities requires separate prior written approval. Permission may only be granted if there is a public or scientific interest in the exercise. An appropriate fee must be paid for the use of facilities, personnel and material.
