Student financing
According to the Social Survey of the German Student Union, 90% of students in Germany receive at least partial financial support from their parents. However, this is rarely the only source of income. More than half of all students have a job alongside their studies and just under a third receive state support through BAföG. The best-known foundations with selection criteria and funding regulations are compiled on this page.
Student loans and credits
Students in Lower Saxony are entitled to a student loan from public-law credit institutions in the amount of the tuition fee as part of their first degree. The loan does not have to be repaid until the student has completed his or her studies and taken up employment, depending on the student's income. In addition, some banks also offer loans to finance living expenses during studies.

Every year, the Studentenwerk calculates an average value for "normal students" from broad surveys of students, which you can use as a rough guide for your planning. The actual cost of living is, of course, highly dependent on the respective place of study (Munich is more expensive than Lüneburg) and personal demands.
