Preferred admission
Before proceeding to the multi-stage admissions process, the College will consider whether there are any applicants who are to be given preference for admission.
Preferential admission applies only to applicants who have been admitted to a program of study at the College and do not take up that program of study because of service. When reapplying for the same degree program, these applicants will be given preference for admission.
Preliminary and special quotas
For each study program, 20 percent of the study places are reserved for certain applicant groups. These places are allocated first.
Applicants from the individual groups only compete with each other within the respective pre-allocation and special quota and not with the other applicants.
By law, the following quotas must be taken into account in advance in the allocation of study places:
- Up to 5% for foreign applicants from non-EU countries who have a foreign university entrance qualification: This also applies to applicants who have successfully passed an assessment test at the Studienkolleg or an IB diploma. Only the grade of the university entrance qualification (not the assessment test) is taken into account in the allocation of study places.
- Up to 2% for hardship cases: Please submit an additional hardship application with your application.
- up to 3% for applicants for a second degree: Please enclose the following documents with the application: informal letter of motivation of the motives for the intended second degree including any supporting documents and a copy of the degree certificate of the first degree program
- a percentage to be determined for professionally qualified students (maximum 10%)
Important notes
Applicants who participate in the admission procedure via the preliminary and special quota are automatically excluded from participation in the admission procedure of the main quota (waiting period, aptitude test and selection interview). Only applicants with a hardship application will continue to participate in the admission procedure in the main quota (waiting period, aptitude test and selection interview) after deduction of the preliminary and special quotas.
Foreign applicants from the EU / EEA are admitted exclusively via the main quota.
Waiting time
The waiting period is the time after the acquisition of the university entrance qualification and before the start of studies. The waiting period is calculated in full semesters: from April 1 to September 30 and from October 1 to March 31 of the following year. For example, if your graduation certificate was issued in May, the waiting period starts from October 1. The total waiting period to be considered is limited to 16 semesters.
In Lower Saxony, no application to a university is required for the accumulation of waiting semesters. The university calculates the waiting semesters from the date of the university entrance qualification to the date of application.
Periods of study abroad as well as in Germany at a university not recognized by the state are taken into account when calculating the waiting period.
Waiting period quota
Of the study places available after deduction of the preliminary and special quotas, 10 percent are awarded to the highest-ranking applicants on a ranking list according to waiting time. Applicants with a longer waiting time have priority over applicants with a shorter waiting time. Among applicants with the same waiting time, the following auxiliary criteria will decide in the given order: Average grade of university entrance qualification, service completed if applicable, lot.
If you are not admitted on the basis of your waiting time, you still have the opportunity to be admitted in the main quota via the qualification criteria of level 1 (grade and commitment) and, if applicable, level 2 (aptitude test and selection interview).
Important note
The waiting period quota applies to all German and foreign applicants from EU / EEA countries. Foreign applicants from non-EU / non-EEA countries are admitted exclusively via the preliminary and special quota.
Improvement of the waiting time
If you obtained your university entrance qualification before January 16, 2002 and have previously completed vocational training, you will improve your waiting period by one half-year for each six months of training. A maximum of four half-years can be credited. If you acquired your university entrance qualification after January 15, 2002, there is only a waiting period improvement of two half-years for training completed beforehand. If you obtained your university entrance qualification after July 15, 2007, you will no longer receive a waiting period improvement for completing vocational training prior to your university entrance qualification.
Stage 1: Grade and commitment
After deducting the preliminary and special quotas as well as the waiting period quota, the remaining study places per study program are allocated according to qualification criteria.
In the first stage of the selection process, the grade point average of your university entrance qualification and special extracurricular achievements come into play.
Qualification criteria
- Grade of your university entrance qualification
The final grade of your university entrance qualification is converted into a point value. You can receive a maximum of 30 points for this grade. - Points for extracurricular activities
You can receive additional points for a voluntary year, an activity as a school representative, a school/study stay abroad of at least four months and other, precisely defined extracurricular achievements. You can receive a maximum of 5 points for extracurricular achievements.
Study place allocation
The points from the conversion of the final grade of the university entrance qualification as well as for the recognition of extracurricular activities are added for each applicant.
The added points from the converted final grade and extracurricular involvement are ranked. According to this ranking, 25 percent of the study places are awarded to those with the best points.
