DFG funding for open access (2023-2025)

2023-01-09

Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to inform you that the German Research Foundation (DFG) will fund Leuphana's Open Access Publication Fund from 2023 to 2025. This is a result of a successful application by the MIZ:Library in the DFG funding programme "Open Access Publication Funding". Below you will find details of the funding offer.

General information on the publication fund
The MIZ:Library's Open Access Publication Fund has so far been financed exclusively by Leuphana Open Access funds. From 2023, DFG grants will be part of this fund, so that university members can benefit from both sources of funding. The eligibility criteria for DFG funds are almost identical to those for Leuphana Open Access funds. One difference concerns the group of persons eligible for funding (see below).

How much is the funding?
The DFG will subsidise open access articles with 700 EUR each. In addition, the difference up to 2,000 EUR (incl. tax) can be covered by Leuphana Open Access funds. Any remaining costs above EUR 2,000 (incl. tax) must be covered by the corresponding author.

Which persons are eligible for funding?
The DFG funds articles where the corresponding author is a member of Leuphana University Lüneburg until the publication date and indicates Leuphana as the primary affiliation in the article. An employment relationship with Leuphana is not necessary. This means, for example, that visiting scholars, all matriculated doctoral candidates and matriculated students are also eligible for DFG funding.
In contrast, Leuphana Open Access funds can only be used for articles where the corresponding author has an employment relationship with Leuphana until the acceptance date. In this case, too, Leuphana must be stated as the primary affiliation in the article.

Which articles are eligible for funding?
The DFG funds are provided for open access articles, regardless of whether they were the result of a DFG-funded research project. Funding via DFG and Leuphana Open Access funds has the following prerequisites, among others:
- The article is published in a fully open access journal (i.e. all articles are published open access). The journal should preferably be indexed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (https://doaj.org/). Articles in MDPI journals that meet the funding criteria can be subsidised with DFG funds of 700 EUR each, but not via Leuphana Open Access funds.
- The article is quality-controlled ("peer reviewed").
- The article is published under a Creative Commons licence (preferred: CC BY 4.0).
- The article is of the type "Research Article".
- The funded article includes a funding notice. The wording varies depending on the source of funding (DFG and/or Leuphana) and will be communicated to the authors by the Open Access Team.
- No funding is provided for articles in subscription journals with an open access option, articles in mirror journals (= open access version of an existing subscription journal) and non-research articles. Furthermore, funding is not provided for additional fees, such as page charge, colour charge or submission charge.

How does the application for funds take place?
The publication fund is administered by the MIZ:Library, so funding applications for DFG and Leuphana Open Access funds must be submitted there. Applications are submitted via a web form (German only): www.leuphana.de/services/miz/forschen-publizieren/open-access/publikationsfonds/antragstellung-artikel.html. Alternatively, an application can be made via e-mail to openaccess@leuphana.de.

After the application has been submitted, the Open Access Team will check whether the prerequisites for receiving DFG funding and/or Leuphana funding have been met and will then contact the authors.

DFG funds will be spent exclusively on open access articles. The Leuphana will continue to provide funds to finance open access books. More information on the Open Access Publication Fund can be found on the MIZ website: www.leuphana.de/en/services/miz/research-publish/open-access/publication-fund.html
