Retirement

Professors with a civil servant status for life retire in accordance with Section 35 (1) sentence 1 of the Lower Saxony Civil Service Act (NBG) in conjunction with Section 27 (2) sentence 4 of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act (NHG), taking into account Section 21 (5) sentence 1 NHG, they retire at the end of the semester in which they reach the age of 68.

Notwithstanding this, professors - as well as all other civil servants - can be retired upon request when they reach the age of 60. The Lower Saxony State Office for Pay and Pensions (NLBV) in Hanover determines whether this reduces the civil servant's pension by a deduction in individual cases.

General information

Even after retirement, professors must continue to be available to Leuphana University of Lüneburg with regard to any pending examination procedures.

Process: Retirement on reaching the age limit

At the beginning of each semester, all professors who reach the age limit in the respective semester are automatically contacted by the Professorships/Officials department. A retirement certificate is handed over at the start of the semester. The certificate is regularly handed out at an appointment with the President in the month before the start of retirement. Professors will be notified of the date by the President's Office.

Process: Early retirement on request

  1. Applying for early retirement: Professors can informally apply in writing for early retirement at the end of each semester after reaching the age of 60. With regard to teaching planning, the application should be submitted more than six months before the desired start of retirement if possible. The draft letter linked below can serve as a template for the application. The letter is sent to the President via the Dean's Office and reaches the Professorships/Officials Division via the President's Office with a statement from the President.
  2. Confirmation of receipt by the Professorships/Officials Division: The receipt of the application by the Professorships/Officials Division will be confirmed in writing. You will receive a questionnaire from the NLBV and a declaration on the use of the data as attachments.
  3. Complete and submit the NLBV questionnaire: Attached to the letter from the Professorships/Civil Servants Division is a questionnaire from the Lower Saxony State Office for Pay and Pensions (NLBV) on the granting of civil servant pensions, which must be completed, signed and returned to the Professorships/Civil Servants Division no later than three months before retirement or transfer to retirement. The Professorships/Civil Servants Department will forward the application together with the personnel files to the NLBV Hannover so that the amount of the future pension can be calculated.
  4. Submit a declaration on the use of the data: In addition, all professors* will receive a declaration form regarding the use of their data. This declaration states whether Leuphana University may contact them after their retirement for necessary reasons, in particular to send them information and invitations to university events.
  5. Clarify further organizational questions: Any organizational issues relating to the professorship should be clarified directly between the retiring professor and the Dean's Office
