Lüneburg. On April 18, 2023, a special concert will take place at 7 p.m. in the Forum of Leuphana's Central Building. On the occasion of the awarding of this year's Hosenfeld/Szpilman Prize to the project Krzyżowa-Music, a quartet consisting of four young musicians from different European countries will play music that leads into the darkest period of German history and at the same time gives hope that there are ways out of barbarism and hardship.
The concert will begin with Frédéric Chopin's Nocturne in C-sharp minor, the piano piece that was at the center of the meeting between the two namesakes of the prize amidst the ruins of the Warsaw Ghetto and thus became a symbol of a piece of humanity amidst the horror. In addition, Szpilman's Mazurka in F minor from 1942 will be performed, as well as the "Quartet for the End of Time," composed by Olivier Messiaen in 1941 while a German prisoner. The concert will be complemented by excerpts from the diaries of Wilm Hosenfeld and from the autobiography of Wladyslaw Szpilman, read by Lüneburg actor Niklas Schmidt.
