Opening Week | COLLECTING

Dear students

From 5 to 13 October 2023, we welcome around 1,300 first-semester students to Leuphana College - right on campus. Barbara Plankensteiner, museum director (MARKK) and co-spokesperson of the renowned Benin Dialogue Group, will launch this year's Opening Week. The chamber orchestra "ensemble reflektor" will provide the musical prelude.

TOPIC
The focus of this year's College Opening Week is the theme "COLLECTING". We invite first-year students to explore the phenomenon of collecting - in art and economics, politics, ecology, and in close relationships. 30 project topics allow you to gain insights into the future of museums, resource consumption, artificial intelligence, social trust, or power in democratic societies. UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY
We are especially pleased that we were able to prepare this year’s Opening Week together with professors Sylvia Haider, Lynn Rother, Philipp Sandermann, Valentin Schatz, and Hannah Trittin, who will act as hosts of Leuphana’s traditional start into a new academic year. In total, more than 20 Leuphana professors, 20 research assistants and lecturers from all five Schools of Research, as well as around 100 tutors will accompany the project work of our new students.

GUESTS
This year's guests at the Opening Week include Johannes Vogel, Director General of the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin, Sabine Fischer, expert on Russian foreign and security policy, as well as Maike Scholz, Telekom representative for digital ethics.

The university public is also welcome to attend the Opening Weeek. On Monday, 9 October, at 6:30 p.m., the writer and journalist Özge Inan will read from her novel "Of Course You Can't Live Here" in the “Klippo” cafeteria of the Central Building.

LUNCH BREAK
The lunch break for participants of the Opening Week is scheduled from 5 to 13 October from 12:30 to approx. 2:00 p.m. Please note that there might be longer queues during this time.

The Opening Week is an event close to our hearts each year. As always, the Opening Week team works particularly closely with many units across the University.
