Three electric cargo bikes ensure climate-friendly business trips
2022-11-22 Lüneburg. The topic of mobility plays a decisive role when it comes to making Leuphana's campus operations even more sustainable. The university has been climate-neutral in terms of energy, business trips and vehicles since 2014. However, we are constantly working on further improving the environmental balance. The use of cargo bicycles in the area of building management and the possibility of borrowing such vehicles from the university are further building blocks for sustainable mobility.
Anyone who regularly spends time on campus will certainly have noticed them - the three new e-bikes with the large Leuphana inscriptions. The new service vehicles of the university's building management are used for journeys that were previously often made by car.
Karl-Heinz Berens, an employee of the Leuphana horticultural nursery, has been using his e-load bike almost daily since the end of last year to transport equipment for his work on campus. The Leuphana Housekeeping Service's cargo bike has been on the road since this summer. Martin Hoffmann and his six colleagues use it mainly on the central campus and for trips to the Rotes Feld campus. Since October, the mailroom team has also had an e-bike. Sabine Schulz and her colleagues use it to travel around ten kilometres a day throughout Lüneburg.
According to the users, it took only a short time to get used to steering or starting. Even the initially unfamiliar large turning circle did not pose a problem in road traffic. However, Sabine Schulz says with a twinkle in her eye that one should beware of speed cameras in 30 km/h zones.
Thomas Müller, Head of Facility Management, sees the three new e-bikes as another step on the way to a climate-neutral vehicle fleet in his department. "Thanks to the new vehicles, numerous car journeys are avoided every day, thus reducing CO2 emissions. In addition, using bicycles is of course much more cost-effective." This path is to be continued and the remaining internal combustion service vehicles will also be gradually replaced in the spirit of sustainable mobility.
Fancy a cargo bike? Students and employees can borrow a cargo bike from the university free of charge. This is possible during the opening hours of the MIZ equipment lending service in Building 7, Room 115. Employees can also borrow one of the four company bicycles there.
